Obituary of Rachel Joan Davis

On May 30th at her home in Milwaukie and surrounded by her loving family Rachel J. Davis passed away after a long and courageous battle with emphysema. She was 75. Rachel was born on June 24th 1938 in Portland, Oregon to parents Carl and Myrtle Mills. She was one of 13 children and is survived by four of her siblings. A Portland native, Rachel attended Lents Elementary and Franklin High Schools. On November 30th 1957 she married the love of her life Gaylord “Butch” Davis. They quickly started their family, having four children in four years. When the children were young Rachel stayed at home with them, returning to work when she could. Her work life as a bookkeeper took her to Warn Industries where she and Butch worked together, and then to Flomatic where she worked with her daughter Kelly and her son Rick. After she retired she chose to work part-time as a waitress at her and Butch’s favorite hangout, Country Bill’s on Woodstock. After serving lots of lunches to her many friends there, she hung up her apron to spend time with her family and enjoy her well-earned retirement. Rachel filled her life with family and friends. She especially enjoyed games such as bowling and pinochle. She and Butch loved taking trips to places like Reno and Spirit Mountain where she always hoped to win big. Rachel and Butch loved to camp and fish for salmon. An avid reader, she always had a good book going. She and Butch loved to go out and dine with their many friends and they enjoyed dancing and music. Her grandchildren were her greatest joy and she was an awesome grandmother. She always had a hug and treat for the grandchildren. Birthdays and holidays were always a treasured time for Rachel and she made each holiday special with decorations and good cheer for all. Rachel was a compassionate and accepting woman, a devoted wife, a loving mother, a caring grandmother and good friend to many. She was open-minded and a gentle soul with a warm heart and smile for everyone. Rachel is survived by her loving husband of 56 years Butch, her sons Kerry, Rick and Tracy, daughter Kelly, grandchildren Jami, Charlotte, Kincaid and Ryan, brothers Norman, Gordon and Fred, and sister Donna.
