Obituary of Lucille Louie

In Loving Memory of Lucille Grace Louie May 11, 1940 – December 15, 2022 Lucille Grace Louie, one of the owners of Huber’s, Portland’s oldest restaurant and bar, passed away on December 15, 2022, at the age of 82. Lucille (Lucy) was born May 11, 1940 to parents Andrew and Amy Louie. Her father was the nephew of Jim Louie, the Chinese immigrant and chef who was hired by Mr. Huber in the late 1800’s. Huber’s, the family business, was willed to Lucy’s father in 1946 when Jim Louie died. Lucy was 6 years old when her parents took over the day-to-day operation of Huber’s in downtown Portland. Lucy was the oldest of 3 siblings. She attended Abernathy Grade School, Washington High School, and took classes at Portland State College (now Portland State University). She and her two younger brothers grew up around Huber’s and they all helped out in the family business. Beginning in high school, Lucy helped with bussing and waiting tables, and she cashiered back when Huber’s had a cashier’s stand. She continued working at Huber’s for many years. This was a blessing because Lucy had some handicaps, yet she was able to help out because it was a family business. This allowed her to have a job, which she enjoyed. When Lucy’s parents passed away, they willed Huber’s to Lucy and their sons James and David. James and David took over the day-to-day operation of Huber’s and continue to do so today. Lucy continued to live in the family home in which she grew up, and in spite of her handicaps, lived there independently well into her 70’s. Lucy was kind and sweet. She had an innocent child-like spirit and was very loving and giving. She enjoyed drawing and arts and crafts. She had beautiful handwriting. Later in life she enjoyed the activities and friendships made at FolkTime, a weekly gathering and socialization program for people with mental illness. Lucy attended FolkTime regularly for years and continued going until a couple of months before she passed away. Lucy was preceded in death by her parents, Andrew and Amy Louie. She is survived by her brother James Louie and sister-in-law Helen; her brother David Louie and sister-in-law Cindy; 3 nephews, 6 great nieces and nephews, and many friends that loved dear, sweet, Lucy. Lucy had a simple faith and trusted in Jesus Christ her savior. We believe the words of Jesus who said, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies.” John 11:25 ”...Everyone who looks to the Son and believes in Him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.” John 6:40 In lieu of flowers, we think it would please Lucy to make a donation to FolkTime in her memory. Information on making a donation can be found at https://folktime.org/support-folk-time/
