Obituary of Evelyn Lavonne Carter

Evelyn Lavonne Carter passed away early Tuesday morning, March 15th, 2022. She was 96 years old. Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband Leslie Ryder Carter who passed away February 15th, 1993. Evelyn was born February 6th, 1926 in Carthage, South Dakota to Clarence Johnson and Navada Demming Johnson. They migrated west during the Great Depression to Ridgefield, Washington. After attending high school Evelyn worked as a typist and stenographer during World War Two in Portland, Oregon. Her shorthand was so precise that she could take dictation and give it to others to transcribe. Evelyn was proud to remember her shorthand well into her 80’s. Evelyn married Leslie on June 27, 1947. She was a housewife throughout the 1950’s, 19960’s and 1970’s. During the 1980’s she and her husband Leslie worked as property managers for an apartment complex. During the 1990’s, after her husband’s passing, she worked for Americorps as a tutor for school children. She was the mother of four children, Carl Carter, Judy Eby, Jill Carter Baker and Hans Carter. She was also a foster mother to numerous children, including Duane Cleary and Jonathan Marshall who passed away in 2018. She was the grandmother of six children and great grandmother of two. Evelyn enjoyed sewing and embroidery and had a love for animals from her childhood living on a farm. She particularly had a love for cats and dogs as well as children. Evelyn also loved family gatherings during the holidays and was known for making divinity, lemon meringue pie from scratch, and Cathedral Window Fruitcake. See below for service information.
