Obituary of Glen O. Gulde

GLEN ORVILLE GULDE July 1, 1925 - February 20, 2022 Glen Orville Gulde passed away peacefully at the home of his daughter, Deborah Mazour, who had been caring for him, on February 20, 2022 at the age of 96. He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Jean Frazer Gulde. Glen and Jean celebrated 70 years of marriage before Jean’s passing on July 23rd, 2018. Glen was born in Portland, Oregon on July 1, 1925 to Leslie and Cora Gulde. He grew up in a logging camp near Coos Bay, OR where his father worked as superintendent. At the age of nine, they moved to Battleground, WA, raising chickens on a farm next to the Lewis River. After graduating from Battleground High School in 1943 he joined the Air Force, serving on Okinawa with the ground crew of a B-29 photo reconnaissance group. The ground crew stayed close, enjoying several reunion gatherings over the years. When Glen returned home, he met Jean on a blind date while attending Linfield College, and married her soon after. Together they settled in Portland where he graduated in 1950 from Lewis and Clark College with a degree in Business. In 1957 Glen started Gulde Construction Company, successfully building single family homes in the Portland, Gresham and Vancouver areas until his retirement in 1990. He was a fun and loving father, grandfather and friend, and together he and Jean were a fun and loving couple, who devoted themselves to raising and enjoying four children and later their families. Glen and Jean enjoyed many full and devoted years of bringing up their four children in the outdoor beauty they enjoyed in the Northwest. In the 1950s, summers were spent loading up the Ford station wagon with their large canvas tent to camp in places as close as Mt. Hood, OR and as far away as Beaver Lake, Canada. Jean encouraged Glen to go and enjoy hunting and fishing with friends. The summers of the ‘60s and ‘70s found them rafting and camping on the Owyhee, John Day, Deschutes, Rogue and Snake Rivers. Winters were spent skiing with family and friends in Bend, OR, Idaho, Utah, Colorado and Wyoming. The ‘90s found Glen and Jean still skiing at Mt. Bachelor with friends in the “Over the Hill Gang.” Interspersed in their adventures, they would visit Jean’s favorite place, Hawaii. Glen devoted the last ten years of his life caring for Jean, who suffered from dementia, visiting her every day when she lived in memory care. He is survived by their four children, Stephen, Deborah, Michael and Jennifer, seven grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. He is preceded in death by his wife, Jean, his parents, Leslie and Cora Gulde and his brother, Wayne. Glen will be interned at Wilhelm’s Portland Memorial, with a private family memorial later in the month.
