Obituary of Frederick Robert Hallwyler

Frederick Robert Hallwyler passed away on May 13th, 2021 in Phoenix, AZ while under hospice care, after a brief battle with glioblastoma. Fred was born in Portland, Oregon on January 22nd, 1952 to Robert Frederick and Mary Lou Hallwyler (née Groce). He was raised in the Portland area and spent his formative years on the banks of the Willamette River. He graduated from Rex Putnam High School and studied business at Oregon State University. He entered the family printing business, a career he continued in for over 30 years, notably and proudly working for Graphic Arts Center for the majority of that span. Before retiring, Fred spent a few years running his own overseas manufacturing company, work which led him to travel to exciting new destinations, including China and Thailand. He finally retired and settled in Phoenix, where he spent his remaining years golfing and travelling. Fred had a deep love for the finer things in life, and time spent with him was often centered around great food, insightful conversation, and an ever fun and joking atmosphere. He learned to golf and fish at a young age – two traditional Hallwyler family activities – and remained in passionate pursuit of a low handicap and a big catch until his final days. An excellent cook, he loved few things more than cooking for others, especially his family. He enjoyed travel, never said no to watching a good movie or an exciting game, and he had a true appreciation for music in many different genres, having been an accomplished young saxophone player in his own right. He enjoyed fitness and exercise, but also wouldn’t refuse a great cheeseburger or an extravagant feast of sushi. Outgoing and friendly, Fred never met a stranger, and was known to put others at ease with such a welcoming personality. He was a genuine optimist, and held a positive mindset through even the most dire circumstance and darkest challenge. His children, Jessie and Alex, were his pride, and he always beamed at their accomplishments, often remarking that their births were the greatest days of his life. And his grandchildren were his joy, as he treasured being “Opa,” a role he was made for with his playful spirit. To them he leaves behind a poignant example of gentleness and affection. Fred is preceded in death by his father, Robert Frederick. He is survived by his mother, Mary Lou; aunt Karen Eason; daughter Jessica and her husband Paul; son Alexander and his wife Kaitlyn; sister Wendy Myers and her husband Terry; brother Rick and his wife Sheri; grandson Carter and granddaughter Coraline; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, loved ones, and dear friends. He is so missed by them and all others who mourn his sudden absence and forever hold his memory. A Celebration of Life is planned for Saturday, July 17th at a private residence. Details will be shared on Facebook.
