Joanne was such a wonderful and committed person. Her contributions to the American Musical Instrument Society made the organization what it is today. We will miss her very much. I am so glad I got to work with and know her.

Jo was my roommate for 2 1/2 years at Duke University, a treasure, a real mensch--goodwill toward everyone--and a great musical talent. She befriended me and drew me out of my shell of self-consciousness. I loved her dearly but lost touch during a difficult time in my life. Our mutual friend Beth Hedrick got us back in touch two or three years ago--It was a blessing.to be immersed in Jo's kindness and interest and sympathy again, and to love her back in the brief time we had.

I knew Jo for nearly thirty years. She was my wife Beth's dearest friend from their college days at Duke, and over the years Jo became my good friend, too. She and Jim visited us more than once in Austin and we had several wonderful visits with them when they lived in Hoboken and later in Portland; we also went on a memorable trip to Mexico together. Jo was one of the greatest conversationalists I've ever known. A chat with her was always interesting, engaging, and just fun. I will miss her terribly.

Jo was my close friend for nearly 50 years, and I will miss her for the rest of my life. When I think of what it means to lose her, I think of her kindness and hospitality—as do all her friends and loved ones. But I also think of how much she knew and could do, and the fact that this knowledge is now gone, at least as it existed altogether in one bright, lively place. She knew, in a practical way, the price of bonds (at least up to 2001, when she retired from Wall Street), the Western piano repertoire, sewing and bead-making (she once took a class on welding silver for jewelry), and all kinds of cuisine. She knew her way around numerous cities, both in the US and abroad, and she could tell you where to find good food in most of them. She could make a shirt or a curtain in short order, construct a tax spreadsheet, and bake a wicked sacher torte. She could work an Aga stove and tell you anything basic you needed to know about real estate. Because of her practical skills and her willingness to share the fruits of them, I found her company comforting as well as deeply entertaining. Over time I came to believe that there was nothing that she and Jim, between them, couldn’t create or manage or make more beautiful, whether it was a flower bed, a new bookcase, or a Brahms chamber piece. She was, in short, incredibly accomplished. Jo was relatively small in stature (at least beside tall friends like me), but she was an enormous presence in any room she entered because of her conversation, which was legendary among those who knew her--trenchant and lofty and comical by turns (she loved animal stories and owned a metal watering can shaped like a pig). Most of all, she always gathered others into her conversation out of a deep curiosity about their lives and feelings, as well as about their material situations. She was the very best of friends, a polymath as well as a true humanitarian. In her these qualities were all one. We won’t see her like again. Jim, Sandi, and all of those who loved her, I share your loss.

We have been so lucky to have had the joy of Joanne's company on many ocassions here in England, and on (bassoon related) trips in Europe. Her enthusiasm, generosity, good cheer, curiosity, great conversation, and most of all her warm friendship, all will be greatly missed but always warmly remembered.

I will sorely miss Joanne. My wife Beth (cellist) and I (violin/viola) found music-making with Joanne delightful the 4 or 5 times we came together in her and Jim’s wonderful space these last couple of years. String players like us can be picky about the pianists we play with, as balancing the dynamics among such dissimilar instruments can be challenging if the pianist isn’t especially sensitive and a good listener. Joanne was both of these as well as an artist on the keyboard. She was also a lovely person to just BE with. I always felt instantly at home and comfortable in her presence. And Jim, although a professional musician, was always generous in his appreciation for our amateur but joyful music-making.
Jim, thank you for sharing Joanne with us these last few years. Your love and care for Joanne shines through. I’m sorry I can’t be present tomorrow, but know that you and Joanne are in my thoughts….
With love,
Doug Brown

Joanne and Ruth Kern and Carl Glenn and I played piano quartets every week for several years in the early 2000s. Jim of course was the host with the most. We performed the Brahms C Minor to a packed house on a Sunday morning at 1106 Garden Street on March 7, 2004. I always admired Joanne for ditching the rat race and living life artfully, every day. She is an inspiration, present tense. Katie Lemire

I am sorry to miss the memorial service for Joanne tomorrow. It has been a very great pleasure to get to know her just in the past two years and to play chamber music with her. We were set to read through Beethoven Cello Sonatas not along ago, but then it just became too cold to play in an open garage as we worked to observe safe COVID protocols. Even though I knew her only briefly, one learns a lot about someone playing chamber music. Her warmth, intelligence, and curiosity were ever-present. My heartfelt condolences to friends and especially her family who knew her over many years.
With Sympathy,
Hugh Porter

Joanne and I would spend hours talking on the phone or on one of our many walks in Hoboken and up and down the boardwalk along the river. We covered everything and anything and got so carried away once, we wound up needing a cocktail break several miles north of Hoboken (and then called home for a ride back!!). But the greatest gift Joanne ever gave me was courage, the courage to take the next step in my life and leave the corporate world at a time when I needed to spend more time caring of my aging parents. The timing was perfect and for that I will always be grateful to her. Paul
