It is with heartfelt sadness that we received the news that Charlotte has died. It seems only a few months ago that we said goodbye to Charlotte and Roland on the deck of Hummingbird House in Gilbertsville as we were leaving Oneonta after retirement. Illness, travel and then the pandemic meant we were unable to travel back upstate to see our friends. But we were always in touch. Charlotte was a lively presence on Twitter and on email. We shared photographs. We heard about their plans to travel to Holland and hoped they would be able to spend time with us in the UK at some point.
We have lost a special soul. Charlotte was the most exceptionally kind person. She was one of the first people we told about our own relationship. We spent many happy hours chatting on her back deck. We celebrated New Years Day togetherfor many years. We were thrilled to take Charlotte to Bradford, West Yorkshire, to visit the impressive stately home of one of her ancestors. It was even more exciting to see how this experience emerged in her writing.
This photograph was taken in the garden of the Turkish restaurant in Franklin, NY. We had enjoyed lunch with Charlotte and Roland. It is a lovely picture of Charlotte, smiling and with friends. Just the way she would want us to remember her.
