I am so saddened to learn of Kurt's passing, wwwaaaay too young...way toooooo soon! I met Kurt when he was working at Clark Lewis, my husband had an office in the same building, we'd spend a good deal of time eating, laughing and drinking...enjoying amazing wine Kurt would offer up. He always had a great spirit, attitude, smiles and twinkly eyes. A friendly arm around my shoulders and great hello/good-bye hug, I could always count to those. I'll miss those, I'll miss you, but will remain forever grateful for having met you. Fly on high!!!

First, I am very sorry you, Kurt's family, had to experience losing him.
I've been overseas for the past year - just recently returned. I learned of his passing from a friend while I was away. I didn't believe it at first! He was so full of life! This couldn't happen to him.
Before he passed I can't tell you how many times I thought about dropping by Davenport to see him as soon as we returned! But... I can't. We can't. No one can. Can't drop by his restaurant to say hello, can't send a text or call to see what he's doing. I hadn't seen him since November (2019) because I was away. I can't say hello or goodbye now. Again, no one can.
Kurt was special to the world - thank you for sharing him with us! And, my selfish feelings aside, I am very sorry the world has lost his physical existence. He will live on through all of us.

So sad to hear about the passing. My partner and I were lucky to spend some nights out in Koreatown with him which was such a pleasure. Sending love to his family for this sudden occurrence.

My sincere condolences to Rosemary and to the Heilemann Family on behalf of the League of Women Voters of Winnetka-Northfield-Kenilworth Illinois.
Knowing what a wonderful woman Rosemary is, I/we know her son was an astonishing, kind, talented and caring young man.
Accordingly, it is fitting that a cause such as Save the Boundary Waters would be chosen for memorials.
May his memory always be a blessing.
With sincere sympathy,
Chaya Rubenstein

Not quite sure what to say here. My wife Kara and I had become friends with Kurt after enjoying his skill, passion and dry sense of humor at Davenport. We were lucky enough to enjoy some of his amazing parties which always revolved around his love of sharing good food and good wine with good people. What a terrible loss.

I was so sad to learn of Kurt's passing. We met in Chicago many years ago and kept in touch. He would call to check in and listen when I needed someone to talk to. Our birthdays were 1 day apart so I knew I'd always get a text or message from Kurt to celebrate our birthdays. Rest in Peace to a kind soul whose memory lives on.

I had the pleasure of knowing Kurt about twenty plus years ago.I will always cherish my memories of the times we spent together, in particular, our two weeks together paddling, fishing and camping through the Quetico. One morning Kurt comes to me and asks; if I mind sticking around the campsite a little longer because he's run across a Blueberry patch and is going to make pancakes. His Chocolate Chip cookies were the best I've ever had! Rest in peace Kurt, you'll be missed. The world needs more people like you!

My husband and I so enjoyed getting to know Kurt sitting at the bar at Davenport over the last (I'm not sure how many) years. Yes, the food, and definitely the wine (which we quickly learned to always let him pick), were always delicious, but let's be honest: we went there because of Kurt. "Wine god" and "curmudgeon" were exactly the words I used to describe Kurt, and I love that those are the first words of his obituary. We met so many interesting people from all over the world sitting at that bar, and most of them seemed to be there because of Kurt, too. We brought so many different friends there, wanting to share our favorite place with as many people as possible; we looked forward to bringing many more. The day before Kurt's passing, I was doing a guided meditation with my teenage child: I was asked to envision one of my favorite places to be: how did it look? smell? taste? How did it make me feel? I imagined sitting at the bar at Davenport with Kurt standing before me, mixing me up a Negroni (something I have been sorely missing during this time of Covid19). I had no idea it would be my last time. Thank you to Kurt's family and long-time friends for sharing him with us. Kurt, you made our lives better, and you will be greatly missed.
