Marvin D. Fisher was preceded in death by parents, Gerald D Fisher and A. Maisie Fisher of Portland, Oregon, former wife Jo Ann “Joey” Gibson Fisher (Sacramento), paternal uncles Lloyd (Portland) and Marvin A. (Los Angeles), and, Yorkshire Terriers, Lilly and Amy. Survived by first cousins Nola Rochelle and Justin Paxton both of Los Angeles, second cousins (Rochelle) Derek Barton and Joshua Paxton, (Paxton) Erin Kimberly, Mackenzie Kathleen, and Benjamin Brett, and lastly third cousin Harper Paris Paxton. He leaves behind many close friends who love him dearly and consider him family including childhood friend David Rater, with whom he played long ago on Portland's city park blocks. Marv was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. He was in the first 8-year graduating class at the new Harvey Scott Elementary and in the 2nd 4-year graduating class at the newly built Madison High School, Class of 1962. Upon graduation, he enrolled at the University of Oregon studying social science, pledged Phi Kappa Psi fraternity, and lived in the fraternity house in Eugene. While at Oregon Marv was an active member of Phi Kappa Psi. Upon college graduation he joined the Navy and, after Officer Candidate School, served in Saigon during the Vietnam War as an intelligence officer under Admiral Zumwalt. He left the Navy Reserves with the rank of Lieutenant. Upon returning from Vietnam, Marvin Fisher joined the staff of the real estate division of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Sacramento as a real estate appraiser rising to serve in senior management positions, both in Portland, Oregon, and Sacramento, California. During his career with the Corps of Engineers he provided valued leadership as the Chief of the Real Estate Division. His actions inspired others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more. Marv was a tenor. In his spare time, he enjoyed singing with the Army Corps of Engineers Chorus and for the past 15-years with the West Sacramento Community Singers. A lifelong athlete, running was always his passion although in later years he transitioned into an avid cyclist. He often would ride the American River Trail with close friends. He enjoyed walks around West Sacramento, his home. In earlier years, Marv dabbled in theater and was a favorite leading man with the Hamlett Players. He was a serious Oregon Ducks football fan and annually, up through last year's football season, attended home games with lifelong friends at the U of O campus. He studied the guitar, practicing daily. He had a deep love for gardening and old cars. His favorite heirloom tomato was the yellow pear. He was a great listener and provided sage counsel. His word was his bond. All who knew him especially his former colleagues at the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, fellow members of Phi Kappa Psi, grade school classmates, those who crossed his path will miss Marv, particularly his dry wit and gentle manner. He was a true gentleman and loyal friend. There will be an all inclusive public memorial service where the West Sacramento Community Singers will sing some of Marv's favorite songs at 3:00pm on his birthday Sunday, October 18th, at the First Christian Church, 3901 39th St, Sacramento, California. There will also be an all inclusive public memorial in Portland Oregon on Friday afternoon June 26th at the Portland Mausoleum, 6705 SE 14th Avenue Portland, Oregon, concurrent with the internment of his ashes alongside his uncle Lloyd Fisher, parents, and maternal grandparents. All friends are welcome to attend both services. Marv lived an exemplary life of character and integrity, and did so with humility. He was charming, a joy. Without a doubt he is now in Heaven with his parents, Gerald and Maisie. May God Bless Marvin D. Fisher. We will miss him always.
