Obituary of Judy A. Roger

Judy A Roger passed away quietly on July 16, 2018 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Judy was born on December 29, 1943 to William G. and Aletha M. Macomber of Spokane WA. She married her husband Phillip B. Roger of Spokane on May 1, 1965. She is survived by her husband Phil of Gladstone OR, brother William C. Macomber of Ephrata WA, brother-in-law Al Roger of Spokane and several cousins and other relatives on the west coast. Judy attended John R Rogers High School in Spokane (class of 62), Eastern Washington University and the University of Washington where she studied mycology.

Judy had an infectious passion for everything she did in life and made friends easily. She was a life-long gardener, having been introduced to that activity by her mother and grandfather, Meryl O. Beebe of Spokane. Most recently she was an active member of the Gladstone Gardening Association where she served as vice president for five years.

In her study of mushrooms Judy had an unwavering commitment to educate others as well. She was a life member of the North American Mycological Association, the Puget Sound Mycological Society and the Oregon Mycological Society. She served for 24 years as the Executive Secretary of the North American Mycological Association and helped found the Estacada Mycological Society. Judy was a board member of the Daniel Stuntz Foundation at the University of Washington and was a consultant to the Oregon Poison Center and numerous area veterinarians. Over the years she taught many mushroom identification and microscopy classes for these organizations and through local adult education programs.

Judy was also an avid  racer of Siberian husky sled dogs in the Pacific Northwest. She and her husband operated Spindrift Kennels for over twenty years in the Estacada area and produced several well-known lead dogs and Iditarod team dogs during that time. She also served as the editor of the International Siberian Husky Club Newsletter for several years and brought that publication into the digital publishing age.
