Laurence Harrison

Obituary of Laurence E. Harrison

Laurence passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 20, 2012. He was born Oct. 8, 1921 in Bloomfield, Neb. to Olney and Rosa Harrison. He was the 6th of 11 born into this farming family. He enlisted in the US Army Cavalry in 1939. He was shipped to Italy during WWII as a Veterinary Technician with the 10th Mountain Medical Battalion. He was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant in October 1945, and then moved to Hillsboro, to join family. On June 25, 1946, Laurence married Alice Van Asche and had four children, Allen, Roy, Jeanie and Judy. Laurence enjoyed family get-togethers on Sunday afternoons as well as family vacations to keep in touch with loved ones. Fall deer hunting trips with brother, Lyle and his boys and Laurence's sons were always exciting. Multi-talented, Laurence even dabbled in wine making for a while. When he retired at age 61, he became a prolific woodcrafter and carver and avidly did this 'till 2007. Laurence was a lighthearted, gentle and congenial man…a joy to know and a joy to be with. He was a friend to many and especially loving and caring as a Dad and Grandfather. Alice died in May 1995; and son, Allen passed in December 2010. Laurence is survived by two younger brothers, Lyle Harrison of Milwaukie and Olney Harrison of Portland; one son, Roy Harrison of Arlington; two daughters, Jeanie Stein of Corbett and Judy Caire of Portland and six grandchildren, Jennifer Caire, Leanne Seely, Alexis and Zach Madrid, Sarah and Joe Stein. Memorial services will be at 11:00 a.m., Friday, Nov. 9, 2012 at Wilhelm's Portland Memorial Funeral Home, 6705 SE 14th Ave., Portland. Remembrances to the ALS Association, 700 NE Multnomah St. Suite 870, Portland, OR 97232 or the Alzheimer's Association, PO Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090. Service Information
