Obituary of Susan Ann Sloan

Susan Ann Sloan 1941 - 2012 Susan Ann Sloan passed away unexpectedly October 30, 2012. She was 71 years old. She was deeply loved by her family and friends. Susan was the eldest daughter of Florence and William B. Sloan, Jr. She is survived by her two sisters Linda (Brian Miller) Adlard of Lake Oswego, OR., and Karen (Larry) Ginsburg from Boca Raton, Fl. nieces and nephews James (Denise) Adlard, Portland, OR., Kirsten (Brian) Colling Tigard, OR. , Andrew (Kimberly) Ginsburg, Miami, FL, Julie Ginsburg New York, NY and great-niece and nephew Elise and Wesley Colling, Tigard, OR. Susan grew up in Denver, CO., attended high school in Wilmette, IL., graduated magma cum laude in 1963 from the University of Michigan, where she belonged to the Gamma Phi Beta Sorority. She received her Masters in Business Administration from Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Susan moved to Seattle in 1964 and taught first in West Seattle at Gatewood Elementary, then married and moved to North Carolina in the late '60's and where she also taught school, in North and South Carolina. After moving to Portland, Susan worked for the City of Portland Department of Transportation. She retired a few years ago and made her 'new career' traveling the world. She visited 5 of the 7 continents and it was true that there was ' no moss growing under her feet!' Susan had a very full life; she belonged to the "Bergies" here in Portland where she made many, many good friends that would last throughout her life. She also had the ability to make friends everywhere she went. Susan and her friends travelled together, skied (she was part of an elite ski group called the Moose Herd), hiked, camped, played golf, and recently learned to play bridge. She enjoyed her book club, took drawing lessons--even took a cruise to learn how to draw the old architecture of Spain and Italy this past spring. She loved good music, especially jazz. Among her peers, Susan was often regarded as kind, generous and very, very smart. Susan left us too early and will be missed terribly. She was always there as a Big Sister with her special way of seeing things and her wonderful words of wisdom and keen sense of humor. She often helped us to laugh at ourselves and made everything better. She was the best Big Sister, Aunt and friend and her smile will always remembered and cherished, her family always came first. Her Memorial Service will be at the Adams Chapel, at Riverview Cemetery, 0300 SW Taylor's Ferry Road, on Friday, November 9, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. Private Family Interment. A Reception will follow immediately after the service. In lieu of flowers the family requests a donation in Susan's Honor made to: Itafari Foundation: www.itafari.org/ . An organization that helps others as Susan often did! "Do not mourn me for long—rather, have a wake! Remember me when you feel a soft breeze, when you see a wonderful waterfall or great rafting rapids, or beautiful snow, when you are gathered with our friends, when you hear fantastic music, etc. – live and enjoy life like I did. Remember me when you get tickled or when things get really tough or sad, because I will be there with you, in good times and bad. Remember how Grandma Ebbie always told us there were guardian angels—well, I finally "took a flyer" and got my wings! " Susan Sloan letter dated 8/8/2003 Service Information
