Obituary of Richard F. Gerlach

Avid sports fan and exercise enthusiast, Richard "Dick" Gerlach passed away peacefully at home, with his stepson, Ty, by his side. He was the only child born to Fred and Madrith Gerlach in Waterloo, N.Y. He graduated from Waterloo Central High School in 1945. He was an organizer and player for the Waterloo Monarchs basketball team. He was also a horse owner, sulky driver and trainer. When he moved to Oregon, he met May Bartolon and they were married in 1974. He lived in Milwaukie for the last 30 years with May, who passed away in 1998. Richard was the head gardener at Portland Memorial Funeral Home and a custodian at Portland Community College until he retired in 1994. Richard remained very active, doing aerobics three times a week as well as walking daily until the week before his passing. Any donations may be made to the Milwaukie Senior Center, 5440 S.E.
